Battletags & Privacy Concerns

Everyone knows about Battletags by now, right? If not, go brush up on the FAQ. Theyíre intended to be a ďunified, player-chosen nickname that will identify you across all of Battle.net -- in Blizzard Entertainment games, official websites, and in community forums.Ē. Itís a much better system than RealID which exposed your account email address.
However, that bit about ďidentifying you in community forumsĒ has me slightly worried. I donít use the official forums much, partially because I canít keep track of threads Iíve posted in and the high noise:signal ratio, but a change like this will probably stop a number of people from using the forums, myself included.
Iím a bit of a private person when it comes to in-game time. If Iím raiding, questing or whatever, I donít generally want to engage in guide/theorycraft related questions from complete strangers (in-game time is ďMeĒ time, those questions are best posted on forums where others can reply, not just myself). It hasnít happened in a while, but when someone rolls a level one to ask me a question about Elemental Shaman they can get a little irritated/upset that I wonít help them. I also donít like ďcollectingĒ friends in social media, so I donít plan on doing it in WoW or D3 either.
Itís for this reason that when Battletags go ďliveĒ on the forums that I will cease posting there. Iíve been reluctant to have my Battletag posted anywhere mostly because I donít want to have umpteen dozen friend requests. Iíll be mostly insulated from questions as I usually reject random friend requests on my social media sites, but I expect that some people may end up with unwelcome messages unless they also adopt similar request review systems.
The only ways for most WoW players to contact me is by forum posts, forum PMs, or @ís on twitter. Very few have my IM details, RealID or email address, and I intend on keeping it that way.
Displaying your IM details or email address on other forums is optional, so I donít see why Battletags need to be thrust into the light for everyone to see either.
